Health Care: Limited staff are eligible for enrollment in one of several University-sponsored health insurance plans including single and dependent coverage. Prescription drug coverage is included in all plans. Coverage, deductibles, and co-payments vary by plan. Visit Ohio State University, Human Resources for more information.
Dental: Dental coverage for residents and dependents is available upon employment.
Vision: Vision benefits for residents and dependents are available upon employment.
Worker’s Compensation: Worker’s Compensation is prepaid providing 100% of all medical expenses and for a percentage of wage-loss, which results from job-related injuries or occupational diseases.
Disability Insurance: Limited staff receive prepaid long-term disability income insurance with benefits of one- half of annual stipend in case of total disability lasting beyond 90 days.
Life Insurance: Limited staff are automatically entitled to prepaid term life insurance in the amount of 2 1/2 times their annual stipend, plus accidental death and dismemberment benefits. Optional dependent group life plans are available for spouses, or same-sex domestic partner (separate affidavit required) and dependent children. A variety of plans with varying premiums and limits of coverage are available.
Retirement Benefits: Retirement benefits are provided through the State of Ohio Teachers Retirement System (STRS) or through one of the Alternative Retirement Program (ARP) plans available. Contribution rates can vary from year to year based on program policies.
Malpractice Insurance: The University administers a self-indemnification insurance program. All residents are covered for their activities within the scope of the duties and responsibilities for the training program. It is an occurrence policy. Coverage is at least $1 million per occurrence and $3 million annual aggregate.
Liability Insurance: Prepaid professional liability insurance in the form of occurrence coverage is provided by the OSU Self-Insurance program.
Vacation: PGY-1 residents will receive two (2) weeks of vacation; PGY-2, 3, and 4 residents will receive three (3) weeks of vacation.
Sick Leave: Limited staff begins accruing sick leave benefit hours upon employment. This benefit gives the resident full pay for up to the total number of hours accrued. Full-time employees (100%) accrue 120 hours of sick leave per year. Appointments of less than 100% accrue at a pro-rated amount according to the time actually worked. No moonlighting while on sick leave is permitted.
Personal Leave: Personal leave is permitted for extenuating circumstances at the discretion of the Program Director with input from the leadership of the departments at both hospitals. The amount of leave, however, must stay within the requirements set by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), in order to maintain eligibility to take the written exam.
Maternity Leave: Any resident who is pregnant will be allowed six (6) weeks of maternity leave as granted to all employees at The Ohio State University. Paternity, adoption and domestic partners will receive three (3) weeks of leave. If medically necessary, more leave will be granted. However, if the combination of maternity leave and vacations is in excess of eight (8) weeks in any year of the first three years of training or in excess of six (6) weeks in the PGY-4 year, the training time will need to be extended in order to meet eligibility requirements to take the written exam of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). Again, educational meetings do not count as leave as long as time spent in the meeting is documented.
Paternity Leave: A paternity leave of up two (3) weeks duration is available to any new father including adoptive parents. This will count toward the total leave allowable.
Job & Fellowship Training Interviews: Recognizing that obtaining the proper postgraduate employment or further training is essential,the department allows time for job interviews. During the PGY-4 year, a maximum of 12 working days will be permitted for job interviews without impacting on vacation time. Anytime over that will be deducted from vacation time. The total leave for any reason may not exceed 6 weeks in the PGY-4 year.
On-Call Facilities: Residents and fellows on-call have access to vending, lounge, computer, and sleeping facilities. Sleep rooms each include TV, computer and shower for Residents and Fellows.
On-Call Meals: Funding for meals is provided for residents and fellows on in-house or home call. Along with this there is an after hours food room available from 11pm-6am daily for use by residents and fellows on call.
Labcoats and Dry Cleaning: Residents and fellows are provided with 2 OSUMC white labcoats each year of training. Labcoats and work related clothing may be dry cleaned at no charge throughout training.
Apple iPod Touch: Housestaff members in their PGY 1 and PGY 4 at OSU are eligible for an Apple iPod Touch or Apple iPod Phone. Due to the nature of the iPod and iTunes, the software, including ePocrates, eResults, and e*Value must be loaded through the individual's iTunes account. The Center for Knowledge Management can help install this software if housestaff members bring in a laptop containing their iTunes account. Additional software and device information is provided by Mobile Services.
Meetings: During the PGY 3 and PGY 4 year, up to one week will be allowed for attending a medical meeting. This will not impact upon vacation. More time will be allotted at the Program Director’s discretion if the resident is a presenter or major participant at more than one meeting.
Book Allowance: Each resident is provided with a book allowance of $150 each year.
Parking: The Department of OB/GYN purchases "A" parking permits for all housestaff each year.
Recreation: Discounted fitness club memberships are available through the OSU Center for Wellness and Prevention and Recreation & Physical Activity Center. In addition, many athletic facilities and individual, team, and tournament sports are available across the campus through the Recreational Sports program. Also, many diverse activities and cultural events are available at the University and throughout the city and the central Ohio area.
Ticket Donation Project: Tickets for cultural, sporting and other events can be donated to the GME Office to be distributed to residents and fellows via a lottery system.
Library & Learning Resources: The Prior Health Sciences Library is located next to the Hospital. The Health Sciences Center for Knowledge Management is housed on the fourth floor of the Prior Health Library. Overall, the Ohio State University has 27 libraries. The Medical Center houses a learning center for residents with PCs, laser printers, and free access to the Internet.
Professional Memberships: All residents and fellows are provided with memberships in the Columbus Medical Association (CMA), Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA), and American Medical Association (AMA) while they are in an OSUMC training program.
Counseling and Support: The Program Director and Associate Medical Director will provide an opportunity for counseling or consultation referral related to personal problems that arise out of the trainee's participation in the program or that could affect the ability of the resident/fellow to perform his or her professional duties.
Ohio State Faculty and Staff Assistance Program: Confidential counseling services for OSU employees and their families experiencing distress.
OSUMC Department of Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Care: Chaplains assist patients, families, and OSU Medical Center physicians and staff in meeting spiritual and emotional needs. Sanctuary and meditation rooms are located throughout the hospital. A Chaplain is on call 24 hours per day and can be reached through the Hospital Operator.
