                                                           Hospitalization

The Ohio State University Medical Center serves as a tertiary perinatal center for central and southeast Ohio, in cooperation with the Neonatology Service at Nationwide Children's Hospital.  An average of 700-800 patients are admitted annually in transfer from area physicians and hospitals for medical and obstetrical complications.  A nursing program manager coordinates communication and follow-up with hospitals and physicians who refer patients.

The Antepartum Unit provides in-patient care for complications of pregnancy requiring hospitalization prior to delivery, including;

  • diabetes
  • multiples
  • preterm labor
  • pregnancy induced hypertension
  • medical conditions exacerbated by pregnancy
  • need for frequent monitoring or bedrest

The patient population cared for at Ohio State is the most complex in the region.  Consults from all specialities are readily available as needed.  Recognizing the special physical and emotional needs of these patients, the skilled staff makes personalized arrangements so that each patient's stay is as comfortable as possible.  The antepartum unit is located a few steps away from Labor and Delivery and is staffed by the same experienced nurses.
