Teaching
Graduate students working towards a MS degree or a Ph.D. in various basic science departments use the laboratories of the Division. Physicians working towards a Master of Medical Science degree are also accepted.
The Division has an active graduate program with several graduate students from the Department of Microbiology and the Ohio State Biochemistry Program working on vaccine development. Both anti-cancer and anti-viral vaccines are under development by students and staff. Collaboration with oncologists in our department and the Department of Internal Medicine for conducting clinical trials of new vaccines is a part of our educational program.
Scientists from other University departments as well as those from other American medical schools and foreign countries routinely visit our labs for brief periods to train in specific methodologies. Procedures for peptide synthesis, immunization techniques, analysis of protein structure and design of Peptide and Cancer Vaccines.
Research were: 1) to continue a strong interdisciplinary research program in vaccine development and protein engineering; 2) to develop new useful therapeutics for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases, viral infections and for contraception; 3) to establish a superior educational program for graduate students and undergraduate students seeking elective experience in research; 4) to establish links with the pharmaceutical industry through license agreements from the patents held by division faculty to provide research funds for new development and a royalty stream to the University, College, and Department for both research and education; and, 5) to develop strong links between basic researchers and clinical investigators in the College of Medicine and Public Health to allow meaningful development of new medicines and/or treatments. 6) To conduct clinical trials with combination vaccines and therapy in cancer patients.
