Teaching
Both third and fourth year medical students have an opportunity to gain exposure to the field of reconstructive pelvic surgery during their Ob/Gyn rotations. Third year student experience involves direct patient care on the in-patient unit and in the operating room as a part of their two-week rotation on the benign gynecology service. During that time, they have the opportunity to observe a variety of pelvic reconstructive procedures. Students also receive a one-hour didactic lecture on pelvic floor disorders while rotating on the benign gynecology service. In addition, students have the opportunity to spend time with the Urogyn Division as part of their fourth year elective rotations. These students are provided exposure to patient care and decision-making in the outpatient setting.
One of the main goals of the Division is to provide the housestaff with important experience in the medical and surgical care of women with pelvic floor disorders. Two fourth year residents and one second year resident have assigned duties at the Division's clinical site, gaining a basic understanding for the proper evaluation and treatment options for uterovaginal prolapse, incontinence and other disorders, as well as learning the basics of multi-channel urodynamics and other office-based procedures such as cystoscopy.
Finally, the Division has been active in a variety of other forums including presentations at Grand Rounds, housestaff and student didactic sessions, small group sessions for the Med II curriculum, and lectures at Continuing Medical Education seminars including the nationally recognized Columbus Comprehensive Review Course. There is an effort underway to begin routine community outreach seminars in the evenings to increase awareness of urogynecologic issues and options for management.
