Gynecology
Dr. Copeland, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, spearheaded the Clinical Trial Research Program in Gynecologic Oncology at the James Cancer Hospital, a nationally recognized clinical research forum. Former chief of staff at The James, Dr. Copeland has leadership roles in a number of national professional organizations. He is editor of the Textbook of Gynecology, which is widely used as a reference and teaching text throughout the world. He has also served as Editor for the Journal of Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Copeland has also been elected by many of the “Top Doctors” surveys.
As a national and international leader in gynecologic research, physician-scientists at The James Cancer Hospital have taken a leading role in designing, monitoring and publishing research work of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, an international clinical research organization. Dr. Copeland is the former Chair of the Ovarian Committee and currently served as the group’s national vice chair.
Dr. Copeland received his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1973. He completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada in 1977 and a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas in 1979 where he served on their faculty until 1988. In 2003, M.D. Anderson awarded him their “Alumnus of the Year” award. Dr. Copeland has been on the faculty at Ohio State since 1988.
